Cyprus Set to Join Schengen by 2026
Cyprus is preparing to join the Schengen Zone by 2026, with President Nikos Christodoulides confirming that all technical work will be completed by the end of 2025. This move will make travel easier, boost tourism, and strengthen Cyprus’ role within the European Union.
Why It Matters
Although Cyprus became an EU member in 2004, it has not yet joined Schengen. This means border checks and separate visa requirements still apply. Joining the Schengen Area will remove these barriers, allowing seamless travel across Europe.
EU Support and Progress
The European Union has allocated €292 million (2021–2027) to help Cyprus upgrade border systems, migration controls, and police cooperation—key steps for Schengen entry. President Christodoulides said,
“By the end of 2025, we will complete all the technicalities.”
Benefits for Travelers and Economy
This change will also align Cyprus with the new ETIAS travel system, making it a more convenient destination for global visitors.
The Road Ahead
If approved, Cyprus will officially join the Schengen Zone in 2026—marking a major step toward full European integration and a borderless future for the island.
